En rekke forkortelser har etter hvert utviklet seg i Internett-verdenen. Mange stammer fra chat-rom, hvor folk ønsker å få fortgang i skrivingen sin, men disse forkortelsene blir også brukt ellers på Internett. Derfor kan det være nyttig å vite hva de betyr.

I tillegg er det vanlig å bruke 2920">"ansiktsuttrykk" ("smileys") for å klargjøre tonen i det du sier, siden du på Internett kommuniserer med folk fra forskjellige kulturer og bakgrunner.
